Carthage, Missouri is proud to participate in National Metal Detectorist Day by giving metal detectorists an opportunity to explore three historic city parks. The event will take place the 3rd Saturday in May rain or shine in three city parks: Municipal Park, Central Park and Carter Park. Registration opens at 7 am in Central Park.
Participants simply sign in with name, address, phone number, club affiliation (if any) and a signature to abide by the rules of the hunt. Participants will receive a complementary guest packet with Carthage Visitor Info, City Map, Historic Guides and an identification lanyard.
In addition to offering opportunities to search the three public parks, Carthage hopes that area residents will offer private property to those who come from all over the country to explore the history that lies beneath Carthage. “We expect over 100 hobbyists coming from several states including Iowa, Illinois, Kansas and all over Missouri,” says Wendi Douglas, Executive Director of the Carthage CVB. “I have been surprised by the popularity of this event and the enthusiasm & generosity of the hobbyists.” A critical rule of the search on city property is that historical finds must be donated to the City of Carthage other items may be kept by the detectorist. Many of the detectorists have offered to search private property as well. Private property owners may offer their property for search in three ways: register for the list of sites by calling the Carthage CVB 417-359-8181, list your site and/or phone number on twitter with #CarthageDetectors, or place a sign on the property of invitation to the detectorist. It is further suggested that terms of what may be found and how it is distributed between detectorist and property owner be discussed before a search.
Interested parties and media may follow #CarthageDetectors for live updates at the event. Historically significant items with be photographically recorded as found and media may sign up for text message alerts by contacting Wendi Douglas.
